Get to know your career services staff: Tess Smith

Tess Smith

We’ll be doing a new series focusing on getting to know some of our Leeds faculty and staff.  This week I had the opportunity to interview Tess Smith, our assistant director of graduate career management.

Please tell us a little about your background:

Right before I moved to Boulder I worked at Drexel University in Philadelphia where I managed the International Co-op program, coordinating with international employers and students interested in the international internship experience. Before working at Drexel University, I worked in IT and finance areas throughout the U.S. and worked for several Fortune 500 companies including Eli Lilly and Company, 3M Company, Discover Financial, Towers Watson, and Bank of America. From the education perspective, I have a Master of Science in Global and International Education from Drexel University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology from Purdue University.

What brought you to ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ?  How long have you been working there?

After living on the East Coast for most of my life and traveling to Colorado and surrounding to ski every winter I decided it was time to move out to the Mountain West region permanently. I moved to Boulder and began working at Leeds one year ago, in January 2016.

What has been your favorite thing about the Leeds MBA Program so far?

Working with students is definitely my favorite part. I really enjoy hearing about each student’s diverse background and the professionalism and drive of MBA students impresses me on a daily basis.

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of work?

Everything outside, which is why I wanted to live in Boulder. I’m outside hiking, running, and skiing as often as possible. I’m an explorer by nature, so I travel to new places every chance I get and try and do at least one international trip each year. Lastly, each month I volunteer with my pet therapy dog, Murphy, who I trained when I lived in Philly.

What advice might you have for candidates considering Leeds?

Be open minded and take advantage of every networking opportunity that comes your way.
