Judy Amabile (MBA’85)

Judy Amabile

Why did you decide to come to Leeds?
I wanted to elevate my career and get the skills I needed to become an entrepreneur.

What is one thing you learned at Leeds that you will never forget?
People working together can accomplish much more than working alone.

Tell us about a particular professor or mentor that influenced you while you were at Leeds.
I had Patricia Pacey for Micro Economics. It was tough class, but she made it accessible. She inspired us with her knowledge and her bold personality.

Where has life taken you since you graduated Leeds?
I worked for the University of Colorado Denver in a pioneering program that delivered remote learning to health care professionals around the country. From there, I moved to Coopers and Lybrand, one of the "Big 8" accounting and management consulting firms at the time. In 1994, I co-founded Polar Bottle. For 25 years my partner and I ran this company. We manufactured our product right here in Colorado from American-made parts. Polar Bottle was sold in places like Dick's Sporting Goods, Target, Walmart and thousands of bike shops across the country and around the world. We sold the business in 2018. I am currently the democratic nominee for the Colorado State House in District 13.

What is one piece of advice/best practice that has stuck with you throughout your career?
Business isn't a competition; it is a collaboration. Consider all of the stakeholders in your decisions. That includes your customers, suppliers, employees, the larger community and future generations.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in pursuing a career in your professional field?
Being an entrepreneur and running a business is the best career I can imagine. Don't be afraid to pursue your passion.

What do you miss most about Boulder?
I moved to Boulder in 1975 and live here today. This is home for me.

Is there anything else you would like to share?
Business school taught me so many skills that I have used throughout my career. I am so grateful for the high-quality education I received at the Leeds School.

What is your current title and company?
Candidate, Colorado State House - District 13. Co-Founder and former President, Product Architects, Inc.
