The Graduate Mentorship Program
The Linguistics Graduate Student Mentorship Program helps first-year graduate students transition into graduate-student life at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ and the Department of Linguistics. The purpose of this program is to create a support network for each first-year graduate student, and provide a platform for new and returning graduate students to meet each other; all incoming PhD and MA students are invited to participate and become part of academic and community life at the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Linguistics Department.
Structure of the Program
Each new graduate student interested in the program is paired with a mentor (a current linguistics doctoral student, in their second year or later). The mentor is available to answer questions and give advice on graduate life and research, providing invaluable social and academic support.
Expectations
Each academic year, mentors and mentees will:
- Receive notification of their mentor/mentee match (by the Mentorship Program Coordinator) within approximately one week after the mentorship application period closes.
- Set up and meet for an initial meeting (e.g., over coffee; a coffee gift card will be provided to each mentee and mentor for the initial meeting).
- Meet at least once a month during a mutually convenient time.
- Discuss any questions the mentee may have about the department and life as a linguistics student, etc.
At the end of the mentorship program, both parties will complete an exit survey.
Getting Involved
If you would like to become involved in the mentorship program as a mentor, or if you are a new or incoming graduate student and would like to participate in the mentorship program as a mentee, please contact our current Lead Graduate Teacher for more information, or complete the relevant application survey below.
