ABET Accreditation

The college conducts regular assessments at both the college level and within our departments and programs.

In support of our accreditation efforts, the college frequently reviews objectives, outcomes, and curricula, often with input from advisory board members, faculty, staff, and students. Assessment tools and processes include:

  • Administration, data collection, and analysis of several college and campus surveys
  • Collection and analysis of the Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam data for those programs that use these data in their assessment
  • Course outcome assessment

Changes are made as a result of these tools to increase student understanding in coursework, enhance the learning environment, reflect advances within each discipline, and implement improvements in pedagogy.

Academic Program Review and Planning

All ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder units report on their assessment of outcomes related to education and research goals in self studies that are developed every seven years. This serves as the basis of our reporting to the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting agency for the campus as a whole.

As part of its self study, each department:

  • describes its student outcomes assessment methods,
  • summarizes results since its last self study, and
  • discusses how outcomes assessment results have been used in program planning and change.

Internal and external review committees base their recommendations for the units partly on the material in the self study, including the description of the outcomes assessment process. Engineering units were last reviewed in 2017-2018 to coordinate with the accreditation cycle of ABET.

Other data about departments used in the academic review and planning process is available from the campus Office of Data Analytics.

College Assessment Committee

The College Assessment Committee meets each semester to consider and develop ongoing assessment measures used at the college. The committee serves in an advisory capacity to the director of academic programs and assessment for surveys that are administered by the Dean's Office on behalf of college departments and programs.

Standing Committees

The following standing committees also provide assessment oversight at the college level:

  • Administrative Council - Serves in an advisory capacity to the dean in making decisions related to issues of administration.
  • Undergraduate Education Council - Responsible for developing and coordinating undergraduate educational initiatives.
  • Graduate Education Council - Responsible for developing and coordinating graduate educational initiatives.
