Journalism Graduate Programs
The graduate programs within the Department of Journalism include a Master of Arts (MA) degree that can be personalized for completion in either one or two years. The department also offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree with a focus on journalism studies. In both programs, students craft individual plans aimed at either becoming a communication professional (MA) or entering academia (PhD). In all programs, our students receive hands-on mentorship aimed at providing a solid informational foundation for success.
Our MA program is designed to fit the goals of individual students while still providing a fundamental journalistic education. Our students receive hands-on training using various technologies and graduate with the ability to tell ethical, narrative stories across platforms. The program culminates in a project that is larger in scope. In the past, our students have produced investigative text-based stories, short-form documentaries, business plans for journalistic organizations, multimedia storytelling experiences, and traditional research theses.
In our PhD program, students are fully supported for four years through research and teaching assistantships. The department’s community of scholars focuses on a variety of research areas including media sociology, gender and race within media, environmental communication, political communication, democracy and journalism, international communication, and more.
