Internships have been an important means for students to gain real-world experience in an applied industry setting. Biochemistry encourages lab experience for all students to reinforce classroom concepts. Biochemistry academic labs offer limited opportunities for in-lab work and as a result, we encourage our students to seek out company internships where available. We have been working over the years to build a list of industry partners who are offering internships and now, for the first time,Ìýwe areÌýoffering course credits for Internships for biochemistry students!Ìý

BCHM 4906 Internship for Credit
The purpose of our internship program is to provide academic credit for work experiences in laboratory or field settings outside of the traditional academic lab. Students can earn 1 credit for every 45 hours of work as an intern. A maximum of 6 internship credits may be accrued toward the minimum number of 30 credits needed for the major. Students may earn academic credit through both paid and unpaid internships. This policy is not retroactive, so you may not apply to earn credit retroactively for a past internship. Also, note that a job is not an internship. An internship has a defined length of time during which the student receives specific training related to their future career interests.

Eligibility and Specific Requirements

  1. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
  2. Be a BCHM major in good academic standing making progress towards a degree.
  3. Students are expected to arrange and secure their own internship positions. It is recommended that you seek internships early. Potential internships can be found onÌýHandshake.Ìý Certain local companies have an agreement with the Department of Biochemistry to be preferred partners for hosting BCHM interns.ÌýÌýHighlights of those companies canÌýfound on this page.

The course is designed to help students combine professional experiences with an academic component that involves critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.ÌýBenefits of the course include acquiring professional skills and knowledge, building a network of connections, developing insights on possible career options, and applying classroom material to real-world experiences.ÌýFinal letter grades are based on the evaluation of the student’s internship supervisor and on class performance. Class assignments will include journal reflections on internship experience and the completion of a career portfolio.Ìý We will meet every other Monday on the following dates:

Eligibility and Specific Requirements
To take the course, you must be Honors eligible (cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher) and be ofÌýsophomore,Ìýjunior or senior standing at the time of the internship. Enrollment preference will be given to students enrolled in the Honors Certificate Program. However, it is not a requirement to be a certificate student to take the internship course. You must submit an application before you can be enrolled.
