Manager meets with employee one-on-one

The ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Grow: Management & Leadership Development Series is a campus program that brings supervisors, managers and leaders together with subject matter experts to explore timely, relevant and influential topics.

This annual series in current management issues enhances participants'Ìýknowledge of the competencies and concepts utilized by successful managers and leaders. Current and aspiring managers and leaders from across campus are invited to attend the latest session in the series: One-to-One Coaching.

As managers at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ, we are asked to supervise others. With supervision usually comes the expectation of holding one-to-one meetings (1:1s) with employees, but we are not taught the best ways to hold or handle them and often learn from the 1:1s we have with our own supervisors.

This session will provide an understanding of what constitutes productive 1:1 meetings. Learn tips, tricks and coaching best practices to make your 1:1s more effective. The 1:1 is the foundation of connecting and coaching as a manager.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Communicate the benefits of 1:1 meetings with direct and indirect reports and
  • Apply various methods of structuring 1:1s to coach and support their employees.

The session will be presented by Director of Human Resources in ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder's Housing & Dining Services Chris Mullen, whoÌýis also a speaker, trainer, coach, consultant and blogger at . He has 15 years of higher-education experience working with all aspects of the institution and 10 years of private-sector experience working with both union and non-union organizations—specializingÌýin productivity, work-life balance, hiring practices and organizational and professional development.

MullenÌýholds a master’s degree in administration with an emphasis in human resources. He also holds a senior professional in human resources certification from the HR Certification Institute and is a senior certified professional from the Society for Human Resource Management. HeÌýcompleted a masterful training and facilitation certification from Colorado State University and is currently completing a PhDÌýin higher education and leadership with research on how technology impacts work-life balance.
