Students celebrate life in recovery at national skiathon and leadership summit
2017 ARHE Skiathon: A Collegiate Recovery Leadership Summit | Keystone, Colorado
From Feb. 2 through 5, the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Collegiate Recovery Center (¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵCRC) hosted over 185 students in recovery from 25 other colleges at the first-ever national held in Keystone, Colorado.
The ARHE Skiathon provided a unique opportunity for students in recovery at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder to connect with other sober students from around the country, to gain inspiration and leadership experience and enjoy an epic adventure in the Colorado Rockies celebrating life in recovery.
Over 200 students and staff attended, making it the largest gathering of students in recovery involved in collegiate recovery programs to date. ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵCRC Program Manager Sam Randall was the event chair, along with 20 ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵCRC students and two alumni who were there to help host and participate in the event. All had a great time connecting with students from across the country.
The program included a two-hour leadership workshop, guest speakers, recovery meetings and plenty of time hitting the slopes. Ten students and alumni also participated in a six-minute storytelling challenge on Saturday night, including ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵCRC alumnus Robert Shearon.
Keynote speakers included Scott Strode, founder of Phoenix Multisport Mechie Scherpereel; a graduate of the Texas Tech University Collegiate Recovery Community and now alumni coordinator at The Ranch at Dove Tree; and Ariel Britt, a graduate of the University of Michigan Collegiate Recovery Program and program coordinator for the Kennesaw State Collegiate Recovery Community.
