The University of Colorado Boulder’s Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer Kelly Fox today announced that Vice Chancellor for Administration Louise Vale will retire effective March 14.

“Louise has had a distinguished career providing financial management and strategic direction to the University of Colorado for over 20 years and she will be greatly missed,” Fox said. “As the Boulder campus has undertaken a fundamental examination of how we conduct business in an age of tightening resources her expertise has been key to organizing departments around service and efficiency.”

Fox added that Vale provided outstanding leadership during the historic flooding in 2013 that closed the campus for four days and damaged about 120 buildings.

“Louise provided calm advice and guidance during the flood and recovery period to both the campus leadership and to the staff reporting to her from the Ƶ Police Department, Emergency Management, Facilities Management, and Parking and Transportation Services,” Fox said.

Fox has named Steve Thweatt, who is currently assistant vice chancellor for Facilities Management, as interim vice chancellor for administration starting March 15.

“Steve has a long history at Ƶ and Emory University of providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight,” Fox said. “His experience will be critical in helping us maintain our momentum during this interim period.”

The vice chancellor for administration supervises a division of almost 700 employees and oversees an annual operating budget of $112 million. Areas of responsibility include campus construction, facilities management, public safety, environmental health and safety, human resources, risk management, environmental sustainability, printing and the campus bookstore. Vale has served as vice chancellor for administration since September 2012.

Prior to Vale’s current position, she held other appointments as the director of internal audit for the University of Colorado system and as the associate vice chancellor for budget and operations at the University of Colorado Denver. In addition, she participated in the capital budgeting and planning of new buildings at the Ƶ Anschutz Medical Campus and served for two years on the Boulder campus beginning in 1998 as an assistant to the dean of budget and planning in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Vale holds a bachelor’s degree in comprehensive business management from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, a master’s degree in management from the University of Colorado Denver andis a Certified Fraud Examiner.
