Three University of Colorado at Boulder staff members were honored with 1998 Employee of the Year awards at a reception at Regent Administrative Center April 1 hosted by Chancellor Richard Byyny.

The staff members are Laura Anderson, assistant director of the Family Housing ChildrenÂ’s Center, Marcella Diaz, an accounting technician IV at the University Memorial Center and Sid Gustafson, a laboratory coordinator II in the physics department. The award recognizes both classified and professional exempt staff members for their outstanding job performance and dedication to the campus as well as contributions to the community.

Each recipient received a $1,000 cash award and a framed certificate. Nominations and letters of support for Employee of the Year candidates were sent to the ChancellorÂ’s office for consideration. A three-person committee chosen by Dr. Byyny selected the winners.

Anderson recruits and trains ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ-Boulder student employees who work at the Family Housing ChildrenÂ’s Center and manages child enrollment and the Federal Food Program in conjunction with the center. She also serves on the Coalition for Student Parents Committee. She was cited for her dedication and commitment to the centerÂ’s employees, children and parents.

Diaz acts as an interpreter for Spanish speaking employees, as a mediator to improve relations in the UMC and coordinates UMC events. She also chairs the UMC Employee of the Month Committee and serves on the UMC Brochure Planning Committee. She was cited for her leadership and for her support of positive work environments for all UMC employees.

Gustafson developed faculty, staff and student courses on machine shop technologies for the physics department. He teaches a machine shop technology course each week primarily for faculty, staff and graduate students and also teaches a similar course for undergraduate physics majors. He was cited for his dedication to teaching, his initiative and high level of skill.
