Summer 2024 updated IRB guidelines and approach

Summer 2024 updated IRB guidelines and approach

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) office and the entire Research Compliance team are committed to continuous improvement in the service and support we provide for the research community. Our commitment includes engaging with faculty who assist us in this work. The IRB has been experiencing significant backlogs in reviewing submissions, jeopardizing the timely completion of research projects. Informed by valuable input provided by faculty, an IRB working group has developed a plan to improve turnaround times and reduce backlogs.

Key updates include:

Principal Investigator (PI) Eligibility

  • All Graduate Students are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators (PI) for their research studies. A faculty advisor is still required.
  • Undergraduate Students may not act as PIs. Undergraduate research must be submitted by a faculty member who will assume the PI role.
  • Exempt Categories: Exempt protocol and consent form templates are now available on the IRB webpage. There is also an  you can use to assess whether your research qualifies for an exempt category.

In addition to the above refinements, improvements to templates and the IRB website have been made and should further improve the user experience and process efficiency.
