Newly appointed Teaching Professor Daria Kotys-Schwartz joins four other teaching professors across the college. She operates at a level of teaching, research and service that makes ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder a better place to learn and work. 

Ryan Cole's research helps to develop laser-based sensors for systems ranging from combustion devices to the atmosphere. His personal research is focused on developing and improving models for the absorption of light by gasses at very high pressures and temperatures. He would like to work in atmospheric science applying the skills he has learned at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder to develop new ways to monitor pollution and emissions and their effect on the atmosphere. 

The College of Engineering and Applied Science is establishing new research collaborations and launching an international engineering course in Ecuador, continuing the college’s efforts to expand its global reach and impact.

Congratulations to nine mechanical engineering faculty and staff who were selected to receive awards based on service to the department, positive engagement with students and contributions to the scientific community at large.

Associate Professor Hope Michelsen has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Each year, no more than 0.5% of the APS’s non-student membership is recognized for election to the status of Fellow of the APS.

Increased support and engagement with Colorado’s aerospace sector has enabled the establishment of three new endowed leadership chairs in electrical, computer and energy engineering, mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering sciences.

Dr. Mark Rentschler is an Associate Professor and Sylvia Norviel Cancer Research Faculty Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His team's research in medical devices and surgical robotics is focused on improving the quality of life for patients by enabling less invasive procedures.

Thirty-two alumni and industry partners – seasoned and recently graduated – spoke on panels, presented about their careers and got to know students during the fourth annual Careers in ME Symposium. Over 250 second-year students attended.

Professor Shelly Miller speaks to the role of devices that monitor indoor air quality in improving public health. As the air quality monitoring market continues to expand, she says these devices are not just a trend; they're here to stay.

¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder offers approximately 4,000 courses in 119 distinct fields of study. Some, like mechanical engineering's Design of Coffee, delve into unexpected topics like the science behind farming techniques and the craftsmanship of brewing coffee.
