Students have reported receiving notification by mail and email from the (part of the U.S. Department of Commerce) indicating a response to the is required by law. This is NOT a scam. Every person receiving the survey is required by law to complete it, and to do so accurately.
All responses will be kept confidential by the U.S. government. A fine may be imposed for each question purposefully answered inaccurately or if a person declines/refuses to fill out the survey. The Census Bureau uses the responses to produce statistics.
