Adam Williams has won a Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement grant from the National Science Foundation for $16,000. Adam's research project - titled "Informal Recycling as a Livelihood Strategy Among Recent Rural-Urban Migrants" - explores the ways rural migrants in Shanghai gain access to urban spaces through networks of informal street recycling and trash collecting.

Mason Auger, Abby Hickcox, and Adam Williams have been selected as the recipients of the Geography Department's new Environment-Society Fellowship. Funded by a generous gift to the department, each fellowship provides $12,000 to support research in environment-society relations. Mason Auger's project, "Native Attachments: American Indians and the Yellowstone Environment," explores the fought relationship between the US National Park Service and Native Americans in the context of Yellowstone National Park . Abby Hickcox's dissertation is titled "Open Space? Environmentalism and the Politics of Belonging in Boulder, Colorado" and focuses on the relationship between environmental and racial discourses by examining the politics of belonging constructed through local environmental narratives. Adam Williams' project is titled "Ordering modernity: Informal recycling in Shanghai, China" and examines how urban sustainability and environmental justice factor into the shifting relations between the state, the public and informal recyclers in China.

Adam was awarded a travel grant from the United Government of Graduate Students (UGGS). The award will be used for travel to the Association of American Geographers annual conference in Seattle, April 12-16, 2011 ($300).

UGGS is the primary advocacy group for graduate and professional students on the ��Ƶ-Boulder campus. UGGS is committed to enhancing the graduate student experience at the University by interacting with the University administration and the University of Colorado Student Union (UCSU) concerning issues such as financial aid, graduate stipends, health care, tuition and fees and graduate student well-being. My proposal suggests researching cultural geographies of informal economy, migration and citizenship in Shanghai, in order to better understand contemporary experiences of urban development in China.

The Center to Advance Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences (CARTSS) supports social science research and teaching initiatives on the ��Ƶ campus. CARTSS has funded research and teaching in every social science department on campus. See examples of projects receiving CARTSS support at http://cartss.colorado.edu/ssawardees.html

The CARTSS Graduate Student Fellows program is a competitive grant program for graduate students in College of Arts&Sciences social science departments who have completed all course requirements, passed qualifying exams, and are at the proposal preparation or research stage. We are particularly interested in supporting pilot projects designed to increase the chances of securing external funding support as well as field research, data acquisition, travel, and other research costs essential to successful completion of research required for MA or PhD degrees. Grant requests may be up to $1000 and will be available for Summer 2010-Spring 2011. The interdisciplinary CARTSS faculty advisory board will evaluate proposals so it is important to write in clear non-technical language. Priority will be given to proposals for which other funding is not easily available, to those who have not previously received CARTSS support, and to projects able to demonstrate that the research activity is not possible in the absence of CARTSS support. CARTSS Graduate Student Fellows will be asked to present their work to the campus community during the academic year.
