ENGL 1001-001, 002: Freshman Writing Seminar (Fall 2018)

Black and white drawing of an old Olympia typewriter.

In this course, you will embark on a writing apprenticeship of sorts, honing your voice as you study the work of great essayists (along with a few duds--reading bad writing can help you refine your critical eye, too). As you read and write essays from American classics to the Unabomber manifesto, you will develop your taste and style, build a writing toolkit, share your own material, and give and receive feedback from others. Over the course of the semester, each student will host their own “Author Debut,” in which others will focus on their work. Later in the course, we will focus on 1) identifying opportunities to share your work in the real world and 2) applying your skills for internships and career opportunities as an English major.
