Part-time (25% during the academic year and summer) graduate research fellowships of up to one calendar year are available to support discipline-based STEM education research and educational transformation. These funds must be matched by the student’s faculty adviser, department, or another source. Preference will be given to proposals involving PhD-level STEM education research within a disciplinary department or though an interdisciplinary program.

1. WHAT IS A CHANCELLOR'S GRADUATE AWARD?

  • The Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in STEM Education were established in 2009 to support faculty/staff and graduate student engagement in innovative research on student learning and implementation of research-based STEM education programs and initiatives.
  • Applications may propose support for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education projects in the early stages, for the coordination of existing projects, and to seed efforts that can continue beyond the funding period.
  • Quarter-time (25%) academic year and summer fellowships are available to support discipline-based STEM education research and educational transformation. Preference will be given to proposals involving PhD-level STEM education research within a disciplinary department or through an interdisciplinary program.

2. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A CGA?

  • All ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ-Boulder graduate students engaged (or hoping to engage) in STEM education research

3. HOW ARE CGA PROPOSALS EVALUATED?

  • We attempt to select projects that
    1. Align with our mission and vision
    2. Will serve the greatest need
    3. Represent distinct schools and departments
    4. Are grounded in relevant background research and theoretical frameworks
    5. Demonstrate a clear plan for evaluation and assessment
    6. Include a strong mentoring description

5. HOW ARE CGA's ADMINISTERED?

  • Upon receiving an award, you will be given a speedtype to use for your salary and tuition. Your usual departmental/program administrators should handle all HR administration (offer letter, position entry, etc.) and tuition remission. You will be paid the going rate for graduate research assistants in your department or program. CSL will monitor your spending, and alert you of any issues.

6. WHAT IS EXPECTED OF CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLARS?
Students will be expected to:

  • Attend and be recognized at the annual Symposium on STEM Education
  • While still in early stages, give a brief introduction (~15 minutes) to your project at DBER
  • Actively engage in the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ-Boulder STEM education community by participating in quarterly Chancellor's Fellow events.
  • At the conclusion of your project, present your work to the STEM education community by giving a DBER seminar, or giving a talk that the STEM education community is invited to attend.
  • During the academic year, you may not hold greater than a 50% appointment (teaching or research).

Faculty Advisers will be expected to:

  • Secure matching funds for graduate appointments
  • Work with your departmental administrators to ensure graduate appointments and tuition remission are set up and managed.
  • Attend the annual Symposium on STEM Education
  • Actively engage in the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ-Boulder STEM education community by attending weekly DBER seminars.

7. WHAT ABOUT BENEFITS AND OVERHEAD?

  • Awards are made for quarter time (25%) academic year fellowships and half-time (50%) summer fellowships. We will also cover any associated tuition, benefits, or overhead charges incurred.
