The College of Media, Communication and Information invites you to join the conversation about anti-Asian racism with Professor Jennifer Ho during its upcoming One College Colloquium.

What: CMCI One College Colloquium: A Conversation with Professor Jennifer Ho on Anti-Asian Racism
Who: Jennifer Ho, professor of ethnic studies and director of ��Ƶ’s Center for Humanities and the Arts, and Angie Chuang, an associate professor of journalism in CMCI
When: 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2

The event will feature an audience Q&A and a discussion between Angie Chuang, associate professor of journalism and award-winning reporter, and Ho, professor of ethnic studies and a leading voice on campus and beyond in discussions of racism and racial justice.

Since the spread of COVID-19, anti-Chinese and anti-Asian harassment has been on the rise globally. Ho’s analysis of these incidents has furthered national conversations on the climate of racism through interviews, publications in major news outlets, speaking engagements and more.

“No matter who you are, no matter where you work, no matter what your discipline is in, you can do something about anti-Asian racism,” said Ho, president of the Association for Asian American Studies.

Together, Ho and Chuang will delve into the current wave of anti-Asian racism, particularly its roots in historic discriminatory legislation, policy and stereotypes. They will discuss the political and cultural climate of racism toward Asians and Asian Americans and analyze the impacts of news coverage of high-profile events affecting these communities.

“We’ll never get to where we want to be as a society if we don’t understand how race plays a role in it,” Chuang said. “It’s hard to talk about, and we’re going to give people some vocabulary to talk about it.”

The CMCI One College Colloquium series is one of several ways in which the college seeks to foster and support interdisciplinary engagement and a vibrant intellectual community of artists, humanities scholars, social scientists and designers within the college, across the campus and beyond the university.

Past colloquia have focused on environmental communication and immigration. This year’s colloquia will bring an interdisciplinary focus on the many ways that media, communication and information relate to racial justice.

Lisa A. Flores, a professor of communication in the Department of Communication, is being recognized for her scholarly writings about the experiences of Latinos, Latinas, Latinx, Chicanos, Chicanas, Chicanx and Mexican migrants in the United States.

Flores is also an associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion in the College of Media, Communication and Information and co-chair of the IDEA Council. She will receive four awards on Nov. 20 during a National Communication Association ceremony in Seattle.

The NCA will award Flores the 2021 Charles H. Woolbert Research Award; the Diamond Anniversary Book Award; the James A. Winans-Herbert A. Wichelns Memorial Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address; and the inaugural IDEA Scholarship Award.

“I am honored to receive these awards. I hope the awards signal the realization in the NCA and more broadly that scholarship on race and racialization is critical to the ways in which such scholarship builds knowledge and impacts cultural, political and social life,” Flores said.

University of Colorado Boulder student Serene Singh, a senior who is majoring in political science and journalism, is among 32 Americans who will receive the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University in England starting next fall.

A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Singh is the 20th ��Ƶ Boulder student, the first ��Ƶ Boulder woman, and she is among a handful of Sikh-Americans to claim the coveted scholarship. She is the university’s first Rhodes Scholar since 1993, when All Big Eight tackle and Colorado Buffaloes football team captain Jim Hansen won the award.

She has said she aspires to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court one day, and would be the second ��Ƶ Boulder graduate to do so if she accomplishes that dream, following in the footsteps of Byron “Whizzer” White, who won the Rhodes Scholarship in 1938 and went on to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

“I still feel like I am dreaming,” Singh said Sunday after returning to Colorado from Salt Lake City, where she interviewed with a selection committee. “I woke up this morning with a feeling I’ve never had before. It truly felt like cloud nine times a thousand.

“I’m really proud to represent ��Ƶ, Colorado, women and the Sikh community,” said Singh, who shared the good news with her two siblings and parents, G.B. Singh and Nitu Singh, on Saturday night.

Her sister, Naureen Singh, later tweeted, “My little sister made history tonight.”

A dozen incoming students were on campus the week of July 20 for the 2016 Pathways to Excellence in Media, Communication and Information Summer Intensive. The intensive is a residential workshop that prepares incoming CMCI freshmen for academic success in the college's areas of study. Students get the chance to make their own advertising campaigns and multimedia projects, receive math and writing instruction and tour newsrooms and ad agencies.

Each year the University of Colorado presents the President’s Diversity Award to individuals and programs within the University that help to create a culturally diverse and compassionate university community.

In 2016, the Pathways to Excellence in Media and Communication program received honorable mention from the award’s selection committee for its contributions to inclusive excellence at the University.

Pathways to Excellence is a unique residential workshop that prepares incoming first-year CMCI students for academic success in media and communication. Participating students produce their own advertising campaigns and multimedia projects, receive math and writing instruction and tour newsrooms and ad agencies.

“Pathways to Excellence is more than just an introduction to college for these students,” explained David Martinez, CMCI’s Director of Inclusive Excellence and Equity. “It’s an opportunity for them to make friends they’ll have for the rest of their time at ��Ƶ. And I’m thrilled that the President’s office has recognized our efforts to build a community within CMCI.”

The Pathways to Excellence in Media and Communication program has received honorable mention for its contributions to inclusive excellence at the University.
