New Canvas Resources to Support Student Success

Grade for Student Success Faculty Guide to Student-centered Grading in Canvas

We are excited to announce the new Grade for Student Success faculty guide to student-centered grading in Canvas. The guide was developed by 抖阴短视频 faculty to make grading in Canvas more efficient and customizable for instructors, while supporting student learning and success.听

听

We recognize that educators and students share a complicated relationship with grades. On the one hand, grades can play an important role in supporting student learning. For example, early and frequent low-stakes formative assessments allow educators to track student learning and address misconceptions as they arise. Formative assessments also provide students with opportunities to practice important skills and receive feedback on their learning, empowering them to adjust their study methods and seek out resources as needed to support their own success. At the same time, 抖阴短视频 educators have reported that grading in Canvas can be time-consuming, and it is sometimes unclear how to customize their gradebook settings for their course. Likewise, 抖阴短视频 students report that grades are often a source of stress and anxiety, especially when they are uncertain how their work will be evaluated and how final grades will be calculated.听

With faculty and student perspectives and 鈥済rading pain points鈥� in mind, a working group of nine faculty members partnered with the Center for Teaching & Learning and to develop the Grade for Student Success faculty guide to student-centered grading in Canvas.

This guide includes the following:

16 straightforward grading guidelines to improve the Canvas grading experience for both students and instructors.听
Resources to support implementation, including new video tutorials, written tutorials, and links to relevant campus services and resources.听

We encourage you to consider implementing the guidelines in your courses, and remember that the CTL and OIT are here to support you.听

Canvas Support from OIT

New Canvas course template for 抖阴短视频 educators!

We are excited to announce the launch of a new Canvas course template to support 抖阴短视频 educators and students!听

听

Over the past several months, a faculty working group partnered with the CTL, ASSETT, OIT, DAO, and CE to develop a new Canvas course template. This was part of a broader BUS (Buff Undergraduate Success) Initiative, the Canvas Templates Initiative. The new Canvas template includes template assignments, a template syllabus, template start-of- and mid-semester surveys, and other content and resources. It also incorporates best practices in teaching and learning, digital accessibility, and design, as well as extensive feedback from 抖阴短视频 educators. We hope the Canvas template will reduce instructor course preparation time, while promoting a more consistent, positive Canvas experience for 抖阴短视频 students navigating multiple courses.听

The Canvas template will be made available to all 抖阴短视频 educators via Canvas Commons in mid-October. . If you are interested in trying out the template in your own Spring 2025 courses, please let us know by contacting us at CTL@colorado.edu. Promoting a respectful, inclusive environment is important for our campus, especially when political tensions are rising. Join WorkWell Oct. 1 from 12-1pm for a panel discussion with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP), the Ombuds office and the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) to learn how to navigate political discussions in the workplace. Panelists will also share campus resources available to faculty, staff and employees during times of tension and stress. , and !
The monthly is taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024 from 12:30-1:30pm on Zoom. October鈥檚 session will focus on Navigating AI within Your Departmental Culture With Diane Sieber, (Engineering) and additional faculty panelists. Leave this session with tips for talking about AI with your colleagues and tools to bring your department together for a generative dialogue about the impacts of AI on your discipline.
Want to better understand what鈥檚 happening in your classroom? There鈥檚 still time to request ASSETT鈥檚 Visualizing Instructional Practices (VIP) classroom observation service! Have your class observed using validated observation protocols where we record instructor teaching and student learning activities in 2-minute increments. These data are then used to generate visualizations that provide you with insights into the patterns of your classroom activities and a means to reflect on your teaching practices. The Cherry Award program is designed to honor great teachers, to stimulate discussion in the academy about the value of teaching, and to encourage departments and institutions to value their own great teachers. The recipient of the Cherry Award will receive a prize of $250,000 and will teach in residence at Baylor University during an upcoming semester. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 1, 2024. !

Over the years, many faculty and instructors have shared their feelings of working in isolation and the need for more community building with one another. We know that support, and a sense of community is important for our learners, and it is equally important for our faculty and instructors鈥� well-being and success. Enjoy light refreshments, mingle with colleagues, and meet with our staff. Our goal is to hear from you about your experiences on our campus. What have you found meaningful and/or challenging? What kinds of resources and opportunities would be useful for you? This event is specifically intended for adjuncts, lecturers, and part-time instructors.
