That is when she decided to enroll in the University of Colorado Boulder (¶¶Òő¶ÌÊÓÆ” Boulder) College of Engineering and Applied Science Integrated Design Engineering (IDE) program that allows students to combine engineering with another field of their choice. Humsini had been interested in going into a research field all her life, so she found a unique opportunity to merge her interests in engineering and neuroscience. At that time, the absence of a biomedical engineering degree led her to start on a path that would ultimately shape her future career.

One distinctive aspect of the IDE program is how it incorporates a design-based course every year, which, for Humsini, was "Innovation and Entrepreneurship." This exposure to entrepreneurship challenged her preconceived notions as an engineering enthusiast and encouraged her to pitch her ideas and explore the business side of product development. Throughout her time in the class, Humsini discovered a passion for product development and laid the foundation for her entrepreneurial journey with her classmates. Together, they developed a smart walker that reduces fall risks caused by conventional walkers in older individuals, leading to the creation of Stride Tech.

New Venture Launch Challenge

The success of their project propelled them into the entrepreneurial spotlight and into competing in the New Venture Challenge (NVC), where they ultimately took the victory. Some basic NVC background is that the challenge connects the ¶¶Òő¶ÌÊÓÆ” Boulder campus with the Boulder entrepreneurial community to develop and fund innovative ideas. Participants attend year-round events, network and collaborate with mentors to refine their ideas, and form startup teams that pitch for funding in the finals. Throughout the challenge, Humsini and her classmates transitioned from students with a groundbreaking idea to co-founders of a blossoming company.

While Humsini did not take on the role of the primary presenter in the challenge, she actively contributed by crafting the script and pitch for their innovative walker project. NVC demanded a blend of technical expertise and an understanding of the business aspects that support a successful product in the real world. Crafting a compelling story that combined these elements became a unique art form that Humsini found both demanding and rewarding.

Winning NVC brought great benefits to Humsini and her team. The financial reward allowed them to work on Stride Tech full-time after graduation. The challenge also gave them invaluable connections that they continued to foster as they built this business.

One of the key takeaways from the NVC experience was communication skill enhancement. Engineers, often stereotyped as less sociable, were pushed out of their comfort zones. The challenge forced them to interact with strangers, refine their product pitches and learn the art of self-promotion. These skills proved essential during the competition and became valuable for the team members beyond the NVC.

“Having to practice talking to that many strangers and practice really selling your product and selling yourself was a really valuable lesson, and then obviously the money was huge and kind of allowed us that opportunity to actually work on it full time as opposed to having it die out in undergrad.”

Empowering Aging with Innovative Mobility Solutions

In a world where technology often overlooks the needs of older adults, Stride Tech emerges as a solution, focusing on enhancing the mobility and safety of older individuals. At the core of Stride Tech's mission is a product designed to revolutionize how older adults interact with walkers, crucial mobility aids that can both prevent and pose risks of falls. Stride Tech's solution addresses this delicate balance by providing real-time feedback on how individuals use their walkers throughout the day.

What sets Stride Tech apart is its ability to go beyond immediate feedback. The device collects data on walker usage, allowing for an in-depth understanding of an individual's mobility patterns. This data becomes a valuable resource for physical therapists and loved ones, enabling them to intervene or offer support when needed. The result is improved walker usage, enhanced balance, and a proactive approach to addressing the evolving needs of older adults. In discussing Stride Tech's vision for the future, Humsini emphasizes the company's commitment to integrating innovative technology into the older age sector, envisioning a future where the aging population walks confidently and safely, leveraging technology to enhance their overall well-being.

Fostering Innovation at the University of Colorado's Integrated Teaching and Learning Program

Humsini dedicated herself to the entrepreneurial venture for the next three years. However, the pragmatic realities of life eventually caught up with her, prompting a shift towards stability and the need for a job with health insurance. This transition brought her to the Integrated Teaching and Learning program at the University of Colorado (ITL), where her unique blend of experiences as an entrepreneur and rapid prototyping expert found a fitting role.

In the bustling space of the Integrated Teaching and Learning program, Humsini continues to foster innovation and inspire the next generation of engineers. The ITL Program facilitates hands-on engineering learning within an innovative environment, allowing students to seamlessly integrate engineering theory with practical experience, emphasizing a learn-by-doing approach. At just eight years old, Mark began flipping items on craigslist as he rode his bike to McDonalds for the meetups. This early success sparked a lifelong passion for entrepreneurship, leading to a series of innovative ventures that would shape his future.

Mark continued to demonstrate his artistic talent and hunger for business by painting mailboxes in his neighborhood and flipping fish tanks he found on Facebook and Craigslist. His journey evolved when he worked for a contractor on high-end homes, where an opportunity arose while pulling weeds on a patio. A neighbor, impressed by his work, hired him for a similar task, which earned Mark $50 in just 20 minutes. This experience inspired him to quit his job and start a successful landscaping business.

While working on his landscaping business, Mark experimented with building and flipping vans. After transforming his landscaping van into a camper van at the end of the season, he started his next venture: Geotrek Vans.

Transforming Travel Dreams into Affordable Adventures and Pioneering a Housing Revolution

Mark’s first experience with van conversion began when he flipped his old landscaping van into a camper van for a trip to eight national parks. After six months, Mark sold the van for a $4,000 profit and discovered a gap in the market for affordable, high-quality camper vans. Noticing the steep prices of other mobile homes, Mark decided to explore this niche.

Geotrek Vans is redefining the camper van market with a unique approach that blends affordability, functionality and minimalism. The company, continually evolving to meet customer desires and needs, aligns its vision with the founder's core values of freedom, simplicity and value for money. This exceptional value is achieved by streamlining the design process, offering just one layout that allows for cost-effective production. These vans are also affordable and elegantly designed, featuring bamboo countertops and avoiding unnecessary bells and whistles. The focus is on functional and essential items, maintaining a minimalist yet high-quality build.

At the heart of Geotreck's philosophy is the commitment to offering the best value in the camper van market. They come equipped with large refrigerators, expansive solar panels, substantial battery systems and birch cabinetry, features not commonly found in this price range of $50,000-$100,000.

The growth of Geotrek Vans has been rapid and impressive. In 2021, Mark converted roughly five vans, which escalated to 15 the following year and nearly 70 in 2023 with nearly all converted vans already sold. Based in Fort Lupton, Colorado, the operation has expanded to a team of 14, working on a lot with 20 vans ready for conversion.

Geotrek Van's success lies in understanding how its customers prioritize spending on travel experiences rather than the vehicle itself. They appreciate the basics and seek to stretch their money practically and meaningfully, making Geotrek Vans a game changer in the camper van industry. This unique style of van has opened a world of opportunity, impacting communities as well. Mark's long-term vision for Geotrek Vans is to contribute to the fight to provide affordable housing.

Pioneering Affordable Housing Through Innovation and Simplicity

Geotrek Vans is ambitiously aiming to reshape the landscape of affordable housing in the United States. Mark envisions Geotrek Vans becoming one of the top ten largest companies in the country, dedicated to providing innovative solutions to the housing affordability crisis. Geotrek Vans’ approach is focused on embedding a long-term perspective and values into every aspect of the business.

These modern, simplistic communities Mark envisions offer an affordable and efficient living solution similar to those of tiny homes. Tiny homes are a social movement where people downsize their space for environmental concerns, financial concerns or a desire for more time and freedom. The idea revolves around largely solar-powered and renewable homes, providing a lease-to-own model that allows residents to build equity over time. This idea, still in its early stages, represents a bold step towards redefining the norms of housing and lifestyle in the 21st century. Although living in tiny or mobile homes are not yet legal everywhere, Geotrek Vans is committed to changing the obstacles with current living situations.

“I think we're going to be the affordable housing solution. And that's my lifetime goal. I'm not gonna stop until we reach it.”

Currently, the company's immediate goal is to become the country's best and largest affordable camper van company. The future, however, holds broader aspirations. Geotrek Vans aims to challenge the complexity and high-cost models prevalent in the housing and recreational vehicle markets by keeping things affordable and straightforward.

Advice from a Young Entrepreneur

Having goals and dreams as expansive as Mark’s requires a team to create and implement business principles that you and your team can truly believe in. One of Mark’s core principles is the importance of being obsessed with your venture. This deep passion and commitment are crucial for driving success. Mark strongly believes that true passion for your work is essential and that this passion is what allows you to endure long hours and demanding schedules without burning out.

“If you are genuinely passionate about what you do, the long hours feel worthwhile.”

Mark notes that the success behind his business is driven by an incredible team with shared passions and drive. He emphasizes the role of his cousin, who has been an integral part of his journey. Although there are always bottlenecks and weaknesses in the business process, his teams' collaborative effort makes the challenges worthwhile. Effective collaboration, especially when managing a team, is essential. Mark excels in creating a productive and respectful environment, which has been critical to their growth.

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 01 Feb 2024 07:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 18036 at /business Empowering Authenticity and Community Impact through Beauty and Business /business/deming/news/2024/01/25/empowering-authenticity-and-community-impact-through-beauty-and-business Empowering Authenticity and Community Impact through Beauty and Business Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 01/25/2024 - 00:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Emily Iliff

Graduating from college and facing the world at the age of 22 should mark a time of celebration and new beginnings. But for Laura Moore, this period came with the untimely passing of her mother. Suddenly, Laura found herself not only grappling with her grief but shouldering the responsibility of leading her sisters and supporting her father. From her earliest memories, Laura was a force of nature, immersing herself in every opportunity from the adrenaline of basketball to the endurance of starting new clubs and her perseverance through loss. Laura embraces everything that comes her way. Little did she realize that her appetite to embrace it all would become the cornerstone of her career.

In high school, Laura was an International Baccalaureate (IB) student. The IB program focuses on personal development and skills that align with students’ academic growth. Laura notes that she was one of very few students of color in the program, which had her feeling out of place when she got to the IB program. Laura discovered that years prior, there was the International Baccalaureate Black Organization, which brought together students of color for support through the IB program. When Laura found herself feeling isolated as one of few black students, she reinstated the International Baccalaureate Black Organization to create a space for herself and other students of color to find community.

“I am a firstborn and a natural overachiever. So that was definitely me. But I think a turning point for myself, and for my career really, was back in high school, and little did I know that it was something that was going to follow me.”

Now, Laura is the Office of Diversity Affairs in the Leeds School of Business Program Manager. She thanks her experiences with feeling isolated at school, as well as the challenge of losing her mother at a young age, for unlocking her ability to empathize with students who feel isolated or those who are working through unique struggles.

Embracing Authenticity

Growing up as a student of color in a primarily caucasian-dominated school, Laura empathizes with students who often find themselves facing the challenge of fitting in and overcoming social hurdles. For those who feel like outcasts, walking into a room with their heads held high can be particularly challenging. Laura’s advice is to authentically and genuinely show up in the space as yourself. She encourages students to say to themselves: "This is who I am, and you accept me for who I am." It encourages individuals to boldly assert their presence without validation or conformity. Laura highlights the importance of connecting with others, especially for introverts who may find face-to-face interactions challenging.

“Always authentically and genuinely show up in the space as yourself. Do not try to cover yourself. Don't put a facade up. People will learn to fall in love with that person. And so there is no faking. There is no questioning yourself.”

Silk by Laura: A Journey from Personal Need to Thriving Business

Along with being program manager at the Diversity Affairs Office, Laura spends her time investing in what she calls her “side gig”: Silk by Laura. Being a former participant in Miss Colorado, a state pageant competition, beauty, skincare and self-improvement has been predominant in her life. The idea for Silk by Laura was sparked by the challenges posed by living in Colorado, a region known for its dry climate. Laura recounts her encounters with a shea butter vendor at the Colorado Black Arts Festival, where she would sporadically purchase raw shea butter. Frustrated with the lack of avenues to buy whipped shea butter in her community, Laura decided to take matters into her own hands and make the product for her personal use.

Laura’s vision was not just to recreate shea butter but to enhance it, making it whipped for a more viscous and usable texture. In addition, Laura introduced scents and focused on aesthetics, ensuring that each jar was intentional in its design. Whipped to perfection in a glass jar, each variant of the butter comes with a unique accent, such as rose petals or lavender.

After perfecting her recipe, her friends and family fell in love with her product. Responding to constant requests from family and friends, Laura made the entrepreneurial decision to turn her passion into a business. The journey from taking orders through text messages and Google forms to developing a fully functional website, shopsilkbylaura.com, marked a significant evolution for Silk by Laura. Despite the initial struggles, the venture has brought Laura unique experiences and opportunities she would have never encountered otherwise.

“It has been rewarding because I've learned a lot, on the full operations and day-to-day growth of the business. And it has brought me so many unique experiences and opportunities that I would have never come across if I never started Silk by Laura.”

Small Business Making a Meaningful Impact

Silk by Laura has gone beyond the business of offering unique beauty products and become a conduit for meaningful partnerships and community engagement by working with Imagine Colorado in Lafayette, an organization dedicated to working with individuals with high-functioning disabilities. Laura acknowledges that partnering with Imagine Colorado has opened doors to opportunities beyond the scope of her business. Imagine Colorado has helped thousands of disabled individuals get established in their communities and help them find jobs and careers. Currently serving on their board, Laura expresses the fulfillment she finds in contributing to a higher purpose beyond monetary gains. Drawing from personal experiences with her sister having a high functioning intellectual disorder, Laura's involvement with Imagine Colorado reflects a genuine commitment to making a positive impact. She recognizes the challenges faced by individuals with developmental difficulties and actively seeks ways to support them as they transition into adulthood.

Acknowledging the uniqueness of her small business, Laura sees the opportunity for small enterprises to serve a higher purpose in the community. Small businesses, like Silk by Laura, can provide opportunities for those who struggle in a traditional workforce setting, fostering a sense of purpose and belonging while creating a story for a business to thrive on.

“It's about putting in your passion involving your story because at the end of the day, people will always ask your story.”

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 25 Jan 2024 07:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 18030 at /business From Classroom to Campfire: Blazin' Joe's Sustainable Revolution Ignited by Leeds School of Business! /business/deming/news/2023/12/15/blazin-joe-how-student-makes-difference From Classroom to Campfire: Blazin' Joe's Sustainable Revolution Ignited by Leeds School of Business! Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 12/15/2023 - 06:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Maddie Cataldo

The Leeds School of Business not only provided an education but also helped me and my business to thrive! My name is Maddie Cataldo, and I am so excited to share the story and product of Blazin’ Joe, a company I created while attending the Leeds School of Business. For those who do not know, Blazin’ Joe is an all-natural fire log made out of coffee chaff, a byproduct of the roasting process. Currently sent to landfills, chaff's decomposition releases methane, contributing to environmental harm. Blazin’ Joe is on a mission to make the coffee industry circular by providing people with eco-friendly and all-natural fires. Unlike our competition, which produces smelly artificial logs packed with paraffin wax that are known for their health risks, our logs are made with plant-based soy wax.

Blazin’ Joe was born out of the Leeds School of Business's New Venture Creation (ESBM 4830) class, a capstone class needed for my Bachelor of Science in Business with an emphasis on strategy and entrepreneurship. My team and I owe our business success to the inspiration and mentorship of the remarkable Brad Werner, Faculty Director for the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship. Under Brad's guidance, we pushed Blazin’ Joe to its limits, encouraged to strive for excellence, and given the tools to turn a spark of an idea into a reality. The Deming Center, a hub for aspiring entrepreneurs like me, became a second home during this transformative journey.

To further Blazin' Joe's struggles and triumphs, one of its pivotal moments was the opportunity to participate in the 2023 New Venture Challenge, particularly the Female Founder competition. The experience was challenging and empowering and helped lay the foundation for what Blazin’ Joe is today.

After graduation, I took a detour from Blazin' Joe to South Africa as part of the Entrepreneurship and Empowerment in South Africa program, immersing myself in consulting for disadvantaged entrepreneurs living in South African townships. This hiatus taught me invaluable lessons: how to analyze a business from an external perspective, make a tangible impact on a business, navigate resource constraints and, above all, the grit required for success.

Since returning to Boulder, Colorado, I have dedicated myself to Blazin' Joe full-time. The journey continued with milestones such as completing the Boulder Small Business Development Center's accelerator program and the Crowdsolve Climate Startup Bootcamp. These experiences refined Blazin’ Joe, preparing us to bring our eco-friendly fire logs to the world.

Traditional

0

On

White
Fri, 15 Dec 2023 13:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 17952 at /business Harmonizing Life's Symphony: The Journey of Keith Gruen and the Practice of Conscious Leadership /business/deming/news/2023/12/14/harmonizing-lifes-symphony-journey-keith-gruen-and-practice-conscious-leadership Harmonizing Life's Symphony: The Journey of Keith Gruen and the Practice of Conscious Leadership Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 12/14/2023 - 00:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight deming community
Emily Iliff

“Conflict becomes a liability on the balance sheet of the company.”

Keith Gruen's journey from the vibrant city of Boston, Massachusetts, unfolded as a symphony of both musical notes and conscious leadership principles. He danced to the rhythm of his own aspirations, pursuing classical piano and business during his undergraduate years at Gordon College. However, the melody of his passion was not discovered in the spotlight of performance but in the intricate orchestration behind the scenes. Initially a concert promoter and tour manager for university orchestras, Keith discovered his passion and career resonated with supporting nonprofits in Boston. Drawn to those with remarkable missions who struggle with basic business challenges, Keith struggled to choose between furthering his arts and music education or pursuing a Master in Business Administration (MBA). After finding his passion for conscious leadership through helping nonprofits strengthen their basic business principles, he pursued an MBA from the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business. Keith graduated in 2013 with a dual focus in marketing analytics and organizational change.

Captivated by the allure of Boulder, Colorado's community, Keith chose to make it his home and pursue his passion by venturing into the wellness industry. Engaging in personal development work, he not only contributed to the community but also underwent significant self-discovery by facing his fear of conflict and deciding to make a career out of it. In 2016, Keith became one of the visionaries behind MeetMindful, a revolutionary dating app catering to individuals seeking connections in the wellness realm, like Tinder for singles who shop at Whole Foods." In spring 2016, this venture led them to be accepted into the prestigious Techstars Boulder Accelerator. This program became a catalyst for funding and company growth. Navigating various roles, Keith seamlessly integrated the facets of his MBA education.

Navigating Uncertainty

“The majority of people have no idea what they're doing. There’s an attitude, especially in undergrad, where you have to know exactly what you are doing.”

Kieth notes that he had a plan, and that plan blew up. So did Keith’s second plan, third plan, fourth plan and so on. Through the ups and downs, Kieth continuously asked himself: “What are the things that bring me energy, and how can I do more of those?” Looking back, Kieth notes that that is the theme running his entire career. Kieth describes himself as having five or six different careers. Although unconventional, the idea of trying something out and finding something new, talking to different people and experimenting with what he likes and did not like was exciting and valuable. Keith says,

“Coming out of the MBA program, even with all the amazing connections and networks we meet through there, I applied for 106 jobs and got one. As long as something fit within my skill set, I was ready to learn and ready to apply myself. Be open and curious about what you can learn about any situation you get yourself into. Even that first job, that meeting, that interview that didn’t go well, what was that there to teach you?”

Embracing the unknown became a guiding principle for Kieth, turning setbacks into opportunities for exploration and self-discovery. In a society that often pressures individuals to have their entire lives mapped out, Kieth's journey defies conventional norms. His willingness to pivot, reassess, and embrace diverse career trajectories has taken him to a career he loves today. Through each transition, Kieth's determination to find what energizes him propelled him towards uncharted territories, unveiling experiences that ultimately shaped his professional and personal life. Kieth urges young individuals to find what they love and not settle for less, even in a wave of rejection.

Embracing Conscious Leadership through Mindful Decision-Making and Conflict Resolution

Mindful leaders acknowledge their behaviors and invite feedback from others to help guide their decisions, this is called conscious leadership. For Kieth, conscious leadership is not just a role, it is a dynamic practice fueled by an awareness of himself and those around him. Through his journey with an intensive job search, Keith’s guiding principle was finding a career that energized him and gave him a purpose. Kieth's love for conscious leadership began when he decided to support nonprofits that were failing due to a lack of fundamental business principles. His journey brought him in contact with a facilitator and coach in the world of conscious leadership. This realm, based on the insightful book The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman and Kailey Klimp, inspired a new chapter in Keith's narrative. As Coach in Residence for Boulder Techstars, Kieth helps startup founders and entrepreneurs figure out how to build great companies. This starts with learning to be great leaders, who are aware of themselves and the people around them. Keith says one of his favorite parts of working in this role is meeting entrepreneurs, like himself, who had a similar journey of struggling with conflict.

“A world without conflict is like going through life with an I don't care attitude. You check out of life, and you don’t actually get to experience things. You can’t experience all of the joy you potentially have if you don’t also experience all of the sadness and conflict in life.”

To Kieth, conscious leadership is about leveraging this awareness to craft a reality that aligns with his vision for a better world. Yet, he acknowledges the challenges inherent in this journey. In a world where many of us find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of day-to-day routines, practicing mindfulness can be demanding. The art of staying present in the whirlwind of life requires intentional effort. Kieth's evolution is an illustration of this conscious leadership journey. A self-professed conflict-avoidant individual in his earlier years, he would instinctively retreat when faced with disagreements. Fast forward to today, and Kieth has become a beacon in conflict resolution. He now guides individuals, who, like his past self, yearn to confront conflicts head-on. Through his work, he advocates for the power of self-awareness, encouraging others to navigate life's challenges with authenticity and resilience. Kieth has two pieces of advice for readers who want to practice conscious leadership in their own lives. The first is not to try to avoid conflict, but to become aware of our actions when conflict arises, and practice navigating it in a healthy way. The second is to learn the difference between facts and stories and empathize with how those facts and stories translate differently to the people you are with.

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 14 Dec 2023 07:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 17950 at /business From Theater Lights to Tech Heights: The Journey of a Filmmaker to Chief Revenue Officer /business/deming/news/2023/11/30/theater-lights-tech-heights-journey-filmmaker-chief-revenue-officer From Theater Lights to Tech Heights: The Journey of a Filmmaker to Chief Revenue Officer Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 11/30/2023 - 00:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Emily Iliff

Cue the lights, roll the camera, and let the adventure begin! For Emily Speer Ryan, those three words marked the inception of a lifetime journey from filmmaker to entrepreneur. Emily's path diverges from the conventional entrepreneur's narrative, and through struggle, embracing challenges, and courage, her entrepreneurial odyssey commences with a humble dream rooted in the world of theater.

Living only 60 miles from the Canadian border in rural Idaho, the theater ignited Emily's aspirations to reach for the stars. Post high school, she followed the path of theater enthusiasts and set her sights on the dazzling lights of New York City. Attending the American Musical and Dramatic Acadamy and The New School, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, laid the foundation for her entrepreneurial ventures. Juggling various jobs during her undergraduate years, Emily, by her early twenties, not only provided for herself by working in a coffee shop but also thrived as a solopreneur— the founder and sole force behind an independent film company.

These formative experiences equipped Emily with invaluable business insights that ultimately propelled the film company to its triumphant third-year celebration in 2010.

However, all entrepreneurial journeys have a twist. Emily’s came in 2011. When the 2008 recession hit, people cut back on luxury expenses, and many industries, like independent films, struggled financially. This economic change challenged Emily to pivot in her career and find a new passion. Thanks to her experiences working in the theater and for small businesses, as well as starting her own film company, Emily used her startup skills and entrepeunerial mindset to transition from film to technology. After restarting her career from the bottom, Emily discovered she had a knack for improving a company’s revenue, margins and capacity with her care of the people in the business. Thanks to her success, she co-founded Sandpoint Consulting, helping startups focus on customers.

Grow By Learning

As Emily continued to grow her business and career, Sandpoint Consulting grew succesfully and was absorbed into a larger firm whose focus was on enterprise clients. While working with these larger clients, Emily began to notice that many of the people she interacted with on a professional basis had their Master in Business Administration degrees (MBAs). Through these interactions, Emily noticed that her largely “self-taught” way of operating did not fit with her clients and colleagues. To better understand the language of business, solidify the things that she had learned and communicate more effectively with her peers, Emily decided to complete the Executive MBA program at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder. Emily says:

“The thing that was interesting about the Leeds School of Business and the Executive MBA program to me was the structure. The structure allows you to still do your job but also allows you to get deeply involved with your peers and classmates through your 20-30-person cohort. I liked this because it is very similar to what you do in a company: you’re hired onto a team, and that team is your team, and you have to make it work.”

In addition to the connection and flexibility with her work schedule, the Executive MBA program also offers some of the best hands-on learning opportunities for anyone who wishes to enhance their skill set. When describing this brand new program, Emily says

“The fact that I got to be the guinea pig really piqued my interest. I liked that I got to help to some degree, mentor, and coach how that program needs to show up for students in the future.”

After completing her Executive MBA in 2023, Emily has continued to grow her career and now works as the Chief Revenue Officer for ScaleSec, using her expertise to grow the business’s revenue with a focus on team building and operational improvement.

The Mindset That Makes The Entrepreneur

Emily notes that having an entrepreneurial mindset is what will set you apart from others in life. Anyone can have an entrepreneurial mindset, whether working for a large corporation, small business, or coffee shop. The difference is how you choose to show up. Those with an entrepreneurial mindset are constantly thinking about “how is that business's health?” “How is what I am doing contributing to or taking away from the health and value of this business going forward?”

For any young entrepreneur, Emily encourages you to think of a business as a physical body. An employee who just simply shows up and does the job is similar to our habits, habits happen without putting in any effort. An employee with an entrepreneurial mindset however, is always thinking about how to push that body to be better. This is similar to the way entrepreneurs are always thinking about self-improvement for themselves and their business. They think about how they can be a healthier person, a stronger version, and a more well-rested version. Those entrepreneurs who treat the business as a body and continue to care for its health and well-being, regardless of circumstance, will outlast those who simply go through the motions. She encourages students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in their personal, academic, and professional lives and to continue pushing themselves to grow and look towards the future.

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 30 Nov 2023 07:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 17936 at /business Liz Compos: Empowering Boulder’s Art Community Through Business /business/deming/news/2023/09/07/Liz-Compos-Empowering-Boulder%E2%80%99s-Art-Community-Through-Business Liz Compos: Empowering Boulder’s Art Community Through Business Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 09/07/2023 - 06:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Lauren Gwyn

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who is inspired by others”.
–Salvador DalĂ

Art serves as a unifying force, fostering community, connection, and conversation between people. Liz was a part of the High Growth Venture Fellowship (HGVF) at the Deming Center for her MBA program and attributes the program as a huge part of her success. Through the program, she realized the importance of impact funding, and how scaling businesses do not have to be profit-driven. Her mission in tandem with the Deming Center allowed Liz to make vital connections to further her work for other artists. Through the HGVF and the connections she made, Liz was able to secure an internship with Streetwise Arts. This was the initial catalyst for connecting with the Boulder arts community.

Innovative Workshops and the Art of “Artivism”

Innovative minds push positive change forward. Last year, Liz had the opportunity to work with Boulder County Arts Alliance and Streetwise Arts to put on a series of workshops where mural artists learned about the advantages of applying digital aspects to their art. The workshops are taught by world-renowned digital artists who specialize in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) being applied to physical forms of artwork. The artists after finishing the workshop were able to create a mural around Boulder’s famous Pearl Street Mall with a theme of activism (or as Liz likes to say, “artivism”) and create a digital component of their artwork. Passerbys could view the magnificent murals in person and better understand the message with the digital aspect of the art by using their phones.

“We had artists creating messages about Black Lives Matter. We had artists creating messages around global warming and climate change. There were artists creating messages around indigenous communities and how that relates to climate change and agriculture.”

Join the Creative Journey

Interested in Liz’s mission? You’re in luck! On September 21st you can experience Boulder County Art Allience's Social Media Marketing for Artists event. Artist or not, everyone is welcome and can work on these creative projects. From 11:30 AM to 1 PM at the Boulder Jewish Community Center, Liz and a panel of creatives will walk you through how to make a social media marketing strategy for creatives. The workshop will go over how to use algorithms, content creation, and scheduling apps to your advantage. Liz says that

“[The workshops] are completely open and on the Boulder County Arts Alliance website. You can sign up for their newsletter to get their programming each month and the whole calendar is also on the website. If business in the arts is not the topic you're looking for, but you're really hoping to learn how to paint watercolor in your spare time, and you've never done it before. That's totally fine, too!”

Art is a unifying factor for community and connection. Liz’s journey has not only enriched the Boulder art scene but serves as a testament to the positive impact of artists supporting artists. In an ever-evolving world, Liz’s mission reminds us that art in all forms has the potential to inspire change, provoke thought, and unite communities for a brighter future.

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 07 Sep 2023 12:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 17801 at /business Empowering the American Dream: Fangarde’s Battle Against Soaring Ticket Resale Prices /business/deming/news/2023/08/31/Empowering-the-American-Dream-Fangardes-Battle-Against-Soaring-Ticket-Resale-Prices Empowering the American Dream: Fangarde’s Battle Against Soaring Ticket Resale Prices Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 08/31/2023 - 00:00

Categories:

 deming deming alumni spotlight

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Lauren Gwyn

Taylor Swift is breaking records with her high ticket prices this year. Founder David Banda says that his experience with the class was extremely useful in taking Fanguard to the next level. With Fangarde, venues can set a cap for how much a ticket can be re-sold for. This is a win-win for both concertgoers and venues because it not only drives the re-sale price down of a ticket but also allows venues to use data-driven software to maximize control and regulate the ticketing marketplace.

Empowering First-Generation Dreams: David Banda's Inspirational Journey

David was born in Colorado to Mexican immigrants and is no stranger to what it takes to work hard for the goals he wants to accomplish. He takes inspiration from his dad, who grew up in a small village where he was selling gum on the streets and shining shoes to make money at six years old. He had dreams of doing something big in life and moving to the United States. When he was 18 he moved out of Mexico to America where he eventually met David’s mom. Together they had 6 children and sacrificed everything they had to give their kids the best education possible. Now, David and all of his siblings have successfully graduated from ¶¶Òő¶ÌÊÓÆ” Boulder as first-generation students, and draw inspiration from the hardships that their family ensued. David gives his all to anything he sets his mind to, and Fangarde is no exception.

Three Pillars of Success: David Banda's Ideologies for Achieving the American Dream

David shares that because of his dad’s struggles, he has three messages that push him towards his version of the “American Dream” and success in his life. They include:

“First is the knowledge of what's possible. So that's being surrounded by the right people, and having those people who show you what's possible.

Second, strong belief in yourself. You need to have people building you up and telling you what's possible. You, yourself can accomplish those things.

The third is just you just have to grind incessantly forever.”

David relates these three ideologies to entrepreneurship and says that mentors can help you towards this belief. One of his mentors, David Brown, is one of the main people pushing him to see what’s possible for him in terms of entrepreneurship as well as his co-founder. FanGarde wouldn’t be possible if he didn’t have these ideologies.

Joining the Journey: Getting Involved with FanGarde's Entrepreneurial Pursuit

Currently, Fangarde is connecting with venues and working to become part of their future ticketing. They are always on the lookout for people who want to be a part of their journey. To keep up to date with what they are doing weekly, you can sign up for their newsletter where they share more information and insight on what it’s like being an entrepreneur.

No one should have to pay 158% of the ticket price to see their favorite artist. David says that

“Being a fan is ultimately connecting to art. Right? It's about something beautiful that you enjoy. It is the connection to their art, that beauty that an artist created.”

Connecting with this art is extremely important, and Fangarde is the solution to fix the current broken system of ticketing. With perseverance, the knowledge of what’s possible, and a strong belief in himself and those around him, David hopes to make major changes to this industry.

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 31 Aug 2023 06:00:00 +0000 Anonymous 17792 at /business Speaking Grey: Empowering Mental Wellness Through Conversation and Community /business/deming/news/2023/08/10/Speaking%20Grey%3AEmpoweringMental%20WellnessThroughConversationandCommunity Speaking Grey: Empowering Mental Wellness Through Conversation and Community Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 08/10/2023 - 00:00

Categories:

 deming

Tags:

deming deming alumni spotlight
Lauren Gwyn

Mental health is health. How are you really? This phrase is core to the Speaking Grey mission, started by changemaker Aditi Joshi. While 1 in 5 live with mental illness, 5 in 5 have mental health. Nearly two-thirds of people who struggle with mental illness never seek professional support.

Speaking Grey is a community-based non-profit that focuses on creating awareness, educating, and providing support for mental health and emotional well-being. By catalyzing conversations about physiological well-being, Speaking Grey aims to improve the “grey issues” in one’s life. With over 150 volunteers spanning all over the globe, the non-profit provides support for young adults. She always saw herself as a changemaker, and “came to [the] realization that impact and entrepreneurship go hand in hand if one would be willing to have the bias toward action.”

Aditi was born and raised in the Himalayan foothills in India. As a self-proclaimed “mountain kid,” most of her days were full of exploring nature, meditating and hiking. Despite being a mountain kid at heart, Aditi wanted to focus on her education, leading her to move to the bustling city of Mumbai, India, to pursue her engineering degree at the University of Mumbai. Aditi attributed both places to help bring “unique and incredible opportunities to her.”

From Struggle to Passion-Driven Purpose

Aditi has experienced depression and anxiety, and after an emotional breakdown in 2019, she started a quest for “self-help” to improve her mental well-being.

“I was able to acknowledge my lived experience with depression and anxiety. What started as a quest for self-awareness, self-help and a desire to learn more about mental health turned into this passion-driven project which connected me to fellow mental health advocates and the community at large.”

Aditi realized how many people were looking for a safe space to find resources, hope and a community. Her strategy to promote a positive change in mental health involves breaking the stigma around asking for help. Aditi has noticed that her peers often have trouble asking for this help when they’re mentally struggling. One student, who has attended multiple Speaking Grey events writes that

“The journeys and recovery stories taught me that seeking help and treatment is important. Speaking Grey is a safe and the best platform to learn (and unlearn) and get educated on these issues that people neglect.”

Embracing Support in Boulder, Colorado

Not only is Aditi making an impact in communities globally, but she is doing so right in the heart of Boulder. Her work in Mumbai with Speaking Grey secured her a fellowship with the Watson Institute. Aditi was part of a four-month accelerator program, Watson Accelerator, for global changemakers. The program is designed for impact-driven entrepreneurs to elevate their ventures to the next level. Aditi made valuable connections for her non-profit and loved the mountains that Boulder has to offer, so she decided to stay after her fellowship to pursue her MBA. Now she focuses on strategy and entrepreneurship in Boulder, and is even on the organizing committee for the Dean’s Scholars Program at the Leeds School of Business.

A Vision for the Future

Currently, Aditi has her eyes on bigger and better plans for Speaking Grey. She is in the process of creating a specific support network for international students. Because of her lived experience with depression and anxiety, Aditi has a unique understanding of the guidance that these international students need in terms of mental health, and wants to make sure that Speaking Grey can offer assistance. Aditi says that

“It can be a very rewarding and meaningful experience if you’re ready to be vulnerable and to adapt. Humility, empathy, and consistency definitely go a long way and will help you to meet people who will continue to be your cheerleaders!”

As Speaking Grey continues to grow, so does its support system. Seventy percent of Speaking Grey event and program attendees volunteer to spread the message of increasing mental health awareness.

Interested in joining the journey to show that #mentalhealthmatters or find resources? Everything you need can be found on the Speaking Grey website. They endorse and love floral bouquets by Fresh Sends. The fragrant aroma, striking appearance, and heartfelt sentiment behind the gesture create an unforgettable memory. Ty Hiss started Fresh Sends with her co-founder and husband, Jesse Hiss, to help people feel seen, known, and loved through modern gifting. One thing is for sure– A bouquet goes a long way.

From Wedding Florist to the Nation’s Flower Girl

Ty Hiss graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder (¶¶Òő¶ÌÊÓÆ” Boulder) with a degree in advertising and an additional focus in communications. Out of college, Ty found herself without a clear idea of what she wanted to do for her career. However, her parents instilled an entrepreneurial mindset in her from a young age, which allowed her to take the leap of faith and start a floral design company specifically for weddings and events. Her floral arrangements were a hit, and people soon started requesting bouquets for every occasion– birthdays, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, and more. Ty saw this as an opportunity to revolutionize the outdated gift-giving industry and create Fresh Sends. With its aesthetic packaging, jaw-dropping bouquets, overnight delivery, and wholesome message behind the brand, Fresh Sends delivers an experience that no other company can replicate. Soon, Ty was known as the flower girl of the nation, shipping out thousands of fresh flowers daily.

Fresh sends took off quickly, and Ty and Jesse were quick to keep up. Jesse quit his job in commercial real estate to co-found and become the President of Fresh Sends. Their 900-square-foot house was turned into a mini headquarters, and the couple moved into their sister’s basement to make space for nearly a year to support Fresh Sends. Ty says she is “eternally grateful” for all of the support she has received from her family. Fresh Sends wouldn’t be the same without them. Ty’s parents “always encouraged their kids to find their own path and have full belief that you can execute.” Family plays a huge role in Ty’s life, and when asked about who inspires her most, she mentions

“I have so many people that inspire me in different ways. My family, first and foremost. Both my parents, their wisdom, their courage, their humility. My husband and his incredible commitment.”

Little by Little

Since working out of their 900-square-foot home headquarters in 2019, Fresh Sends now has a 6,000-square-foot warehouse to carry out their day-to-day operations. On a wall, you see their mission statement that reads:

“Helping people be seen, known, and loved through modern gifting”

Right next to that statement, is the phrase “little by little” emphasizing Ty’s special connection to this simple yet effective mantra, which

“reminds me that even if the daily progress seems small, after consistent progress, we can look back and see that massive distance we have come.”

When looking to the future, Ty is amazed at some of the brand partnerships she has planned for the next year that wouldn’t have been possible only a couple of years ago. If someone told her back then what Fresh Sends would be today, Ty says she would have to “pinch herself” to prove she wasn’t dreaming.

The Fresh Sends Team

Ty has an incredible team at Fresh Sends, and she always admires “their commitment to excellence and the mission.” She mentions that

“Our team is amazing. Every day I’m so impressed by their ability to develop new systems and strategies to make our organization stronger. We are in the business of bulk, so each team member [is] committed to making each gift and bouquet as good as the previous one. [This] is one of the many aspects that set us apart.”

Fresh sends is more than just a flower delivery service. It is a way to brighten someone's day and let them know they are loved and appreciated. No matter the occasion, Fresh Sends delivers the vital message to help someone feel seen, known and loved. Ty mentions that “More than ever, it’s important that people know they have a community, people that care about them, [and] we hope Fresh Sends can be a small reminder that they matter.”

There is nothing like the joyful feeling of receiving flowers but also gifting them to make someone feel special. Make sure to head to the Fresh Sends website and send that someone a gift.
