How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
Three Generations!

What do you remember your grandparent(s) sharing about their time at ��Ƶ?
My grandma and grandpa fell in love at ��Ƶ. My grandma taught my grandpa how to dance on that tiny balcony of the UMC looking out over the Flatirons. My grandpa claims to have "kept the Sink* open" because he gave the place so much business during his time at ��Ƶ. My aunt was born while they were students, so my grandpa jokes that he "spent his money on baby bottles instead of beer bottles."

What is one piece of advice/best practice your grandparent(s) shared that has stuck with you?
Invest in people. Make them feel like they're the most important person in the world while you are talking to them.

Can you share an experience of yours that was particularly memorable at Leeds?
My most memorable experience was travelling to Buenos Aires, Argentina, on an First-Year Global Experience trip with my Leeds Scholars’ freshman class. We consulted and presented our business strategy recommendations to an Argentine business, learned to tango, cheered wildly like the locals at a soccer match, and ate way too many empanadas.

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
I grew up singing the ��Ƶ fight song, hating Nebraska football, daydreaming of hiking the Flatirons and hearing stories of ��Ƶ life from the ‘50s, such as when my grandma taught my grandpa how to dance on the balcony. So, in addition to my strong ��Ƶ legacy, the choice was even easier for me when I learned that ��Ƶ Boulder also had a top-notch business school with a focus on social responsibility.

*A ��Ƶ student favorite, the Sink is a funky, family-owned landmark restaurant “on the Hill” in Boulder that opened in 1923.

��Ƶ Generations - Special Edition Spotlight

How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
I’m a third generation ��Ƶ graduate. Both my paternal grandparents attended ��Ƶ Boulder. My grandfather (Papa) arrived from Muskegon, MI for naval officer’s training during WWII and my grandmother (Mimi) was a Colorado native who graduated from East High School in Denver.

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
I applied to a number of MBA programs with strong real estate programs, but when it came down to the decision between the final two, Mimi gently weighed in. She ‘suggested’ that ��Ƶ would be the best program due to its strong alumni network. Given that I intended to make Colorado my home, there was no question where I was headed after that. Just one of the many bits of wisdom she gave me.

What do you remember your grandparent(s) sharing about their time at ��Ƶ?
Mimi always talked about her sorority sisters and the fun she had while in college. In fact, she hosted an annual reunion for her sorority sisters up until her early 90’s. Papa would reminisce about his time playing offensive line at 6’2” and 190 lbs on the ��Ƶ football team (it was a different sport back then). He also spoke vividly about his first time seeing the Flatirons, and at that moment he knew he would never live anywhere but Colorado.

What is one piece of advice/best practice your grandparent(s) shared that has stuck with you?
My grandparents cared very deeply about philanthropy. Papa always held a great deal of gratitude for the communities that helped shape him, like the University of Colorado. He always gave great importance to ‘pay it forward’ and ensure that future generations could benefit from a strong education in the manner he did. Mimi’s philosophy could simply and beautifully be described as ‘find somebody that needs help, and help them’. Both my grandparents taught me the joy and fulfillment of volunteerism and philanthropy.

How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
Our family has three consecutive generations of Buffs and seven in total who have attended ��Ƶ!

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
Both my Grandfather and Father attended the Leeds School of Business. I grew up hearing stories of their time at ��Ƶ and saw how much business has played a role in their lives. I knew that one day I wanted to own my own business and was impressed with the reputation of Leeds. Being in Boulder with the views of the Flatirons didn't hurt either.

What do you remember your grandparent(s) sharing about their time at ��Ƶ?
My Grandpa had a young family and a full-time job in Littleton. He would drive every day to attend night classes in Boulder. He always had a great appreciation for education and the opportunities that came with it, referring to his time at ��Ƶ as a critical point for him and his family.

What is one piece of advice/best practice your grandparent(s) shared that has stuck with you?
I didn't know what I wanted to specialize in as a freshman. My Grandpa shared that he had wished he had focused on Finance, so the next semester I declared that as my area of emphasis. The ultimate takeaway from my grandfather was that you can do anything you want if you are willing to dedicate the time and energy to it.

How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
In our family there are nine Buffs spanning three generations, eight are from California and one is from Chicago.

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
I was the first generation in my family to attend ��Ƶ. I began at the engineering school before eventually making the switch to business.

How did your time at Leeds impact you as a person?
My time at Leeds allowed me to explore a variety of different worlds and disciplines. In business, there are so many different facets – HR, finance, sales, etc. I found that I really enjoyed the marketing side and a class I had in sales and marketing taught by Bill Buskirk.

Could you share an experience (or two) that was particularly memorable?
The entire experience was very enjoyable. One particular memory that stands out was my time in a fraternity. Our group still gets together about every three years. These are all incredible people that I continue to remain in touch with throughout the years.

What is one piece of advice/best practice that has stuck with you?
On first day of class, Bill Buskirk said, “There are three big businesses you can get into that will always be around and make a lot of money: toys, food, & real estate.”

How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
Our family history at the University of Colorado goes back over 100 years. It began with my great aunt in 1915 who attended the medical school and became one of the founders of the women’s physical education department. It then extends through my father, wife, children and other extended family members. We’re even excited that the next generation is coming soon!

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
I always wanted to attend ��Ƶ to follow in my father’s footsteps. Upon graduating high school, my dad gave me two choices: to attend ��Ƶ or ��Ƶ. I guess that made my decision easy!

Could you share an experience (or two) that was particularly memorable at Leeds?
Graduating from the Leeds School of Business opened up a breadth of career opportunities with the help of an outstanding career services department. I was hired by RCA Corporation in their management trainee program which was a stepping stone to future business and career decisions.

Any particular professors or mentors that influenced you while you were at Leeds?
While in school I developed a mentorship under Dr. Morris Massey, the Associate Dean for Undergraduates at the time. He was the professor who influenced me to pursue my Marketing and Finance degrees. Dean Massey always told me that even though I was not book smart, he knew I was street smart! These street smarts have served me well over the past 46 years of my professional life.

What is one piece of advice/best practice that has stuck with you?
My first piece of advice is to find mentors both personally and professionally since those are the people that will most greatly influence your life. I've been fortunate to have had many mentors who have guided me through both my business and private life.

Lastly, always take the high road when it comes to ethics and honesty – both personally and professionally. That's by far the best way to "earn" respect!

How many generations of Buffs do you have in your family?
There have been 5 consecutive generations of the Borden family attending ��Ƶ. This includes my grandfather who graduated in 1909, my father who graduated in 1939, and my own graduation from the Leeds School of Business in 1969. This tradition has carried on with my brother graduating in 1972, my son who graduated in 1995, nieces and nephews who have attended ��Ƶ in the 2000s and now another Borden, a college freshman studying fine arts at the University of Colorado.

Why did you choose to come to Leeds?
I came to ��Ƶ after a vacation visit in 1963 when our family traveled out west by station wagon to see Colorado. Between the beautiful campus and the family history, it was an easy decision.

Could you share an experience (or two) that was particularly memorable at Leeds?
My experience at the Leeds School of business helped me understand the value of community contribution and the importance of integrity in business. Making and maintaining lasting contacts through the school and my fraternity has been very memorable. Having my grandfather (class of 1909) and my father (class of 1939) attend my graduation ceremony in 1969 was my other most memorable experience.

What is one piece of advice/best practice your grandparent(s) shared that has stuck with you?
A quote from Alan Simpson-“If you have integrity nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity nothing else matters.”
